Building a Great Culture at PCI

Oct 18 2017

Every school has a culture. School culture is made up of the norms, values, and the overall feeling that is present. There are a lot of things that go into creating that culture, and believe it or not, that culture can play a major role in how students learn. If your school has a negative culture, it may be influencing the quality of your education.
At PCI, we understand the importance of maintaining a culture that helps students, staff, and administrators get excited about education. We strive to build a strong culture that extends beyond the walls of the classroom that students can internalize and take with them after graduation.
How do we create a contagious culture of excitement and passion? Here are just a few of the things that we think helps PCI stand out from other schools:

Community Involvement

It’s important for students to learn the technical skills they will be using on the job and the importance of becoming a strong member of society. How do we teach our students to get involved with their communities at PCI? We provide many opportunities to participate in community service events, fundraisers, and other activities that help strengthen the community and raise funds for worthy causes. We love being a part of these because it helps people in the community and instills a desire in our students to help others.

Student Events

We are always looking for a great reason to give our students something fun to do between classes. Once you become a PCI student, you will find that there is always something fun happening on campus, from ice cream socials to taco Tuesdays to karaoke contests and so much more. While these types of events may not seem like a big deal, they can make a difference in helping students feel more comfortable with each other and their instructors. As a result, students often feel more willing to participate in class and ask questions – plus we just love having fun!

Welcome Back Weeks

Following long holiday breaks (typically in January and July), students can enjoy a wide range of “Welcome Back Week” activities. Each Welcome Back Week features new and exciting events, and are festive times for students as they become acquainted with each other as well as staff and faculty. During Welcome Back Weeks, entertaining activities are planned every day for students to enjoy that often involve good food, parties, games and more. This is an exciting part of starting school at PCI because you can forge new friendships, get to know your instructors, and immerse yourself in the total school experience.

Support Your Sport

When it comes to sports, Pittsburgh has it all – football, baseball, hockey, soccer, and more. In fact, the PCI campus is located just a few blocks from PPG Paints Arena, the home of the Pittsburgh Penguins. At PCI we love our Pittsburgh teams, and love seeing our students display their team spirit leading up to game day. Students and staff can enjoy dress-down days to support their favorite sports team. Of course, we see a lot of Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates fans, but occasionally a fan of a rival team also joins in the fun. Dress-down days are when students and staff get to wear their team swag and are sometimes complemented with a tailgate party as well. It’s always fun to see the camaraderie of our students on dress down days, plus it provides an excuse to wear something to school outside of the standard medical scrubs.
